Registration for the New Canaan YMCA’s 2021 summer camp programs is now available. The New Canaan YMCA summer camps offer a variety of programs for children of all ages and abilities in the community, providing a fun summer experience in a safe and supervised environment. Summer youth members may begin registering March 1 at the Y.
Camp Mini is open to ages three to five (pre-k) and is a child’s first summer camp experience. Held at the Y, Camp Mini provides a safe and comfortable camp experience for children to play, grow, and make friends. Camp activities include Bouncing Bears gymnastics, arts and crafts, music, outdoor sports, playground time, swim lessons and free swim, theme weeks, and special event days. Camp Mini includes a half-day program which runs from 9:15 AM – 1:15 PM, in addition to a full-day program for ages four to five years old that runs from 9:15 AM – 4:15 PM. Extended morning hours are available for children three to five from 8:15 AM – 9:15 AM, as well as extended afternoon hours for children four to five from 4:15 PM – 5:15 PM. Camp Mini is held as two-week sessions from June 21-August 13.
This summer, the Y offers a new Sports Camp experience that blends athletics and wellness together. Available to youth entering grades 3-8, sessions are offered weekly with each focusing on a specific sport such as football, basketball, soccer, lacrosse, baseball, and more. Held at the Y, Sports Camp also offers daily swim training where campers learn how to swim or hone stroke development, as well as an afternoon of mindfulness activities. Campers may choose their own mindfulness activity per day including art, chess, STEM, yoga, and more. Camp hours are 8:45 AM – 2:00 PM and is held as one-week sessions from June 21-August 13.
Camp Y-Ki is an exciting outdoor camp experience for school-age children who have completed kindergarten through fifth grade. Held at Kiwanis Park, campers enjoy the traditional outdoor camp experience, including swimming, nature, canoeing, archery, arts and crafts, and more. Campers participate in traditional camp activities throughout the day with field trips once a session. Campers entering grades 5-8 also choose a specialty activity that interests them to enjoy through additional dedicated time throughout the week. Camp specialty categories include sports, nature/science, arts/community, and water sports. Camp hours are from 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM. An extended day option is available from 8:00 – 9:00 AM and from 4:00 – 5:30 PM. Camp Y-Ki is held as two-week sessions from June 21-August 13.
For campers interested in becoming leaders and counselors, the Y offers a Leaders-In-Training program at Camp Y-Ki for campers who have completed grades 6 and 7. This program is designed to teach our oldest campers about the importance of responsibility, empathy, and working with others while having fun at camp. L.I.T.-focused activities are similar to regular camp activities, but are tailored to meet the needs of our future leaders. Participants will have two periods of swimming each day, specialty camp activities, and will also attend two field trips; one as an L.I.T. group and another with all Camp Y-Ki participants. New this summer, L.I.T.s are invited to a special overnight event at Camp Y-Ki including dinner, a leadership activity led by C.I.T.s, a movie, s’mores around a fire pit, and breakfast the following morning. Additional information, including event fees, can be found at www.newcanaanymca.org. Camp hours are from 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM. An extended day option is available from 8:00 – 9:00 AM and from 4:00 – 5:30 PM.
The Y also offers a Counselors-In-Training program for ages 14-15 available at Camp Mini, Camp Y-Ki, and Sports Camp. The C.I.T. program offers teens the opportunity to become a memorable and impactful counselor and role model to younger campers, while creating peer relationships and developing leadership skills. New this summer, C.I.T.s are invited to an afternoon and overnight experience at Club Getaway in Kent, CT, where they will engage in team-building and high adventure activities while spending time with friends. Additional information, including event fees, can be found at www.newcanaanymca.org. Camp hours are from 9:00 AM – 4:15 PM and times may vary based on camp placement.
The New Canaan YMCA’s YSN summer camp programs offer children with varying limitations a traditional summer camp experience within Camp Mini, Camp Y-Ki, and Sports Camp. Thanks to donations to the Y, the YSN department offers eligible campers a 1:1 or 1:2 counselor-to-camper ratio at no additional cost. In addition to these inclusive programs, the Y also offers YSN Camp Jam, a program specifically designed to meet the needs of our teen and young adult participants with special needs ages 13 and older. Held at the Y, this specialized camp offers a high staff-to-camper ratio and a structured schedule that rotates weekly to offer: swimming, art, dance, and music therapy, yoga, group fitness, drama, cooking, and weekly special events. Camp hours are 2:30 PM – 5:00 PM and is held as one-week sessions from June 21-July 29
The Y’s nationally ranked synchronized swimming team, the Aquianas, also offers a fun camp experience. The Y’s Synchronized Swimming Camp is a great introduction to the sport and teaches boys and girls ages 6-12 basic synchronized swimming skills while also enhancing their flexibility, endurance, and overall comfort in the water. Camp hours are 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM and is held as two-week sessions from June 21-August 13.
The New Canaan YMCA successfully ran its Camp Y-Ki program in 2020, adhering to all State and CDC protocols, and provided a safe environment for children to re-engage, have fun, and serve as a greatly needed summer childcare option for the community. New Canaan YMCA camps will continue to monitor and adhere to all current COVID-19 State guidelines, while providing a fun and engaging experience for our campers. Camp participants will remain informed as to these guidelines as they are determined by the State for this summer.
All campers must be New Canaan YMCA members in order to participate in camp. In addition to the traditional annual New Canaan YMCA membership, which allows members to utilize the Y and its programs year-round, a Summer Youth Membership is also available for all sessions (June 21-August 13) and is for those who are interested in participating only in summer programs and camp. Registration for Summer Youth Members begins Monday, March 1, at 9:00 AM.
Registration for summer camp is now available. Financial assistance is available to those who qualify and is made possible by donations to the Y’s Annual Support Campaign.
