Youth water activities are not being offered during our current phase of reopening. We look forward to being able to resume these activities for our members as soon as guidelines evolve and we can progress through the phases of reopening responsibly. Swim Lesson Program Overview
The National Y swim lesson program is designed to teach safety, confidence and strength in the water in a supportive and nurturing environment. The program is organized into 8 levels and your child is assigned to a level at the beginning of each session.
School-Age Swim Programs
Preschool and school-age swimmers will be assigned to one of the following levels after his/her evaluation during the first class:
In this class, the children develop comfort with being underwater while also learning how to safely exit in the event of a fall into a body of water.
Qualifications: None/ Non-swimmer/ Fear of Water
In this class, children are taught skills that focus on buoyancy and movement in the water while also learning how to safely exit in the event of a fall into a body of water.
Qualifications: Swimmers should be able to go underwater and comfortably open eyes without goggles, be able to float on front and back with minimal assistance, and be able to jump in the pool, submerge, and return to the wall without assistance.
In this class, children focus on swimming longer distances. Children also learn how to swim to safety in the event that they fall into a body of water.
Qualifications: Swimmer should be able to float on front and back unassisted, push off the wall on their stomach with face submerged for 10 feet unassisted, swim-float-swim 15 feet unassisted, and be able to jump into deep water and return to the wall unassisted.
In this class, children continue to work on their swimming stroke technique and all the major competitive strikes are introduced.
School-Age Aquatics Club
A non-competitive program that is instructional in nature. It is designed for children who swim for fitness, improved endurance, stamina, and skill enhancement.
Qualifications: Participants must be able to swim freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke, and butterfly for 50 yards without stopping.
Simply sign up for the appropriate age group and desired class schedule. On the first day of class, swimmers will be evaluated and placed into the appropriate level. This brief evaluation allows for each child to be placed accordingly to ensure success and growth within the program.
If the Y cancels a program, a 100% refund will automatically be issued.
If a class is cancelled by the Y due to inclement weather or an emergency, every effort will be made to offer a make-up class. If the YMCA is unable to do this, credit for the missed class will be issued.
If participants are unable to attend the scheduled make-up class, no credit will be issued.
If the refund request is received by the YMCA at least 1 week prior to the program start date a 100% refund/credit will be issued.
If the refund request is received by the YMCA by or after the first class, regardless of when the participant was registered and whether or not the participant attended, no refund/credit shall be given.
If a program participant withdraws due to a medical reason, with written verification by a physician, a prorated refund/credit will be issued. Please note, the request must be submitted within two weeks of session end date.
