Registration for the New Canaan YMCA’s adapted fall activities and programs is currently available. Programs begin Monday, September 14.
All programs have been adapted in accordance with CDC and State health protocols. Registration is currently available online for current members as well as at the Y Front Desk.
This fall, the Y offers a variety of adapted activities for youth, including swim lessons for ages six months to 12 years. Parent/child, preschool, and school-age swim lessons are available in five-week sessions to help children learn aquatic skills and safety in the water. The school-age aquatics club provides a non-competitive environment to swim for fitness while improving stamina, endurance, and skills. Adult water activities are also available this fall, including adult swim lessons for those with a range of swim abilities. The New Canaan YMCA Caimans Swim Team, Aquianas Synchronized Swim Team, and Whirlwind Diving Team will also begin their seasons this fall.
The Y’s youth sports and recreational programs offered at the Y this fall for ages 3-13 include backyard sports, preschool soccer, archery, and the non-traditional sports club. Additional youth programs coming soon this fall include Bouncing Bears programs, Youth @ the Y, Middle School Night, Red Cross babysitting course, lifeguard certification course, and intramural high school sports.
The YSN special needs program also offers adapted, specialized social, recreational, and wellness programs for children, teens, and young adults with special needs. YSN after-school programs include YSN Outdoor Fun and Fit club, YSN Swim club, YSN Cardio Dance, YSN Teen Scene Hangouts, and YSN Roaring 20’s Hangouts. Additional YSN special needs programs such as YSN Wave Runners, YSN Teen/Young Adult Free Swim, and YSN Healthy Living Run Club (YSN Striders) & Cooking will be offered at the Y this fall.
The Y also continues to offer personal training, small group training, and pilates apparatus through the fall, providing members with the opportunity to either begin or strengthen their fitness routine with certified Personal Trainers in a private or small-group environment.
Youth ages 12-14 can take advantage of the Youth Strength Training program at the Y to stay strong and fit this fall. After completing the in-person/virtual course, participants will receive a F.I.T. Pass to access the Wellness Center from 2:45-4:45 PM Monday through Sunday by themselves during the school year. F.I.T. Pass holders may also work out in the Wellness Center with a parent at any time.
Kids can also stay active this fall through the Y’s Total Youth Conditioning program. The 5-week small-group outdoor training program is offered to youth ages 8-11 and 12-14, designed to get children moving while having fun and getting fit with a Personal Trainer. Small Group Yoga is also offered in 5-week sessions to elementary school, middle school, and high school participants with a Personal Trainer to discover yoga, unwind after school, and better recover from sports.
A variety of group fitness classes continue to be offered free to members this fall at limited capacity for social distancing, including yoga, conditioning, core, cardio, pilates, bootcamp, and more. Members may reserve a spot for their desired class before arriving at the Y. A detailed list of the Y’s group fitness schedule can be found at www.newcanaanymca.org/schedules.
Virtual classes for active older adults will continue to be offered Monday-Friday throughout the fall, including Virtual Chair Fitness, Virtual Chair Yoga, and Virtual Chair Pilates.
Nutritional Counseling continues to be available at the Y to help participants find a balance of foods that will provide their body with the nutrients it needs for optimal health and vitality. Kristen Schnitzler, RD, ACSM, CPT, works with participants to discover a healthy and manageable lifestyle. The program provides participants with sample menus, personal goal setting assistance, educational materials, and recipes. Nutritional Counseling is customizable to each participant’s needs—whether it be weight loss or weight gain, managing food intolerances or allergies, digestive issues, or disease prevention.
