The long-standing New Canaan YMCA and Y-National program Adventure Guides returns!

The Adventure Guides program instills closer family relationships between parents and children. Our program fosters togetherness by doing fun things such as crafts, hiking, overnight camp-outs, stories, games, and hobbies. In the process, participants get to know and understand each other better. Parents become more aware of their children’s needs, and at the same time children are provided with the important adult role models so necessary to their development. Children savor the joys of valued time with their parents, and parents, the fun and value of companionship with their children on a one-to-one basis.

The Adventure Guides program is not only a great way for children and parents to bond, but it also opens the door for new friendships for all involved. By joining the small group known as a “village” in the Adventure Guides program, you and your children will create friendships that will last a lifetime. Parents and children also join and participate together in small groups called communities.

Program Overview

Adventure Guides strengthens bonds between fathers and children with group activities such as hiking, crafts, games, outings, stories, and more. Held at various community locations featuring group outings, this one-on-one time in a fun, special environment strengthens relationships and creates lasting memories. Fathers and their children are grouped into different community locations where they are encouraged to complete Adventure Guides activities together.

Community Locations

Community locations are based on their New Canaan Public Schools (NCPS) district. Please refer below for location information per NCPS district:

  • Waveny Park (suggested for South School families)
  • Kiwanis Park (suggested for East School families)
  • Irwin Park (suggested for West School families)
  • Mead Park (suggested for non-NCPS families)

Outings

Throughout the year the New Canaan YMCA runs several outings and events available only to Adventure Guide participants. We strongly encourage everyone in the program to participate in these fun events. They do require advance registration. More information can be found in the Y’s latest brochure.

Additional Y Events

Volunteer Days: Held in the winter and spring, these events are open to all Communities wide service events and are planned by your program director and the Compass Bearer.

We invite all families with children in grades K-4 to attend our first-ever Family Camp-In event!

We will take all of the fun of being at an outdoor camp-out, indoors and showcase all that our Adventure Guides Program has to offer to families in our community!

At our Camp-In, families will enjoy activities together throughout the Y, including leather crafting, square dancing, free swim, boat races, camp-like games, and so much more! The event will also feature an indoor “camp-fire” with music and stories shared from past participants about what this long-lasting and meaningful program meant to them.

We’ll provide the fun and the food, including dinner and s’mores on Friday night and breakfast on Saturday morning! You just have to bring yourselves and camping gear such as a tent and sleeping bags to be set up in the gymnasium, as well as bathing suits and towels for free swim.

All participants will receive an Adventure Guides program patch for attending this fun event.
