Our goal at the New Canaan YMCA is to help active older adults stay “forever fit” with specially designed fitness programs options. 

Free Member Classes

Fit and Functional:  Get the maximum benefit of a group exercise class at a gentler pace.  For all ages and fitness levels.

Aquamates:  Water exercise combining cardiovascular and strength training.

Yoga Stretch:  Gentle yoga moves and stretches.

Pilates Basics:  This class focuses on the basic principles of the Pilates conditioning method.  Strengthening the core muscles through controlled, precise movements results in a more balanced, aligned, and strong body. 

Beginner’s Yoga:  Ideal for those new to yoga, those who need modifications, or those who want to learn at a nice pace, focusing on basic principles.

Prana Healing Yoga:  The yoga of healing.  Experience yoga and meditation by incorporating the sounds of chakras into your practice.

NIA:  Join the fun and passion of NIA, a dynamic workout that combines expressive dance, martial arts, and Asian disciplines.  This holistic fitness class is for all ages, relieves stress, and lifts the spirit, promoting flexibility and energy through movement.  Feel your joy, and release your passion!

Additional Sign-Up/Fee Required

These specialty classes are offered during our regular program sessions and require advance signup.  Separate fees apply.

Senior Strength:  Become familiar with different forms of strength training.  Build muscle mass, reduce risk of injury from falling, and enhance your daily living.

Arthritis Exercise:  Water exercise class specifically designed for individuals with arthritis. 

Personal Training:  What could be more motivating than one-on-one sessions with a personal trainer? 

Leisure and Recreation

Therapy Swim:  For older adults, individuals with handicaps, and those needing therapy.  Check the Rec Pool schedule for days and times.

Senior Men’s Club:  For New Canaan men 55 years of age and older who are partially or fully retired.  Open to members and non-members of the YMCA.  The Senior Men’s Club meets Fridays at 10AM at St. Mark’s Church on Oenoke Ridge.  Activities include weekly speakers, recreational activities, service projects, special trips, and theater parties.  For more information, visit the club online at www.smcnc.org.
