The New Canaan YMCA celebrated the opening of its brand-new, state-of-the-art wellness and fitness facilities, as well as highly anticipated brand-new adult locker rooms at a grand opening and ribbon cutting celebration held on January 2. Board representatives, staff, and Y members all came together to celebrate the exciting completion of phase one of the Y’s renovation.
New locker rooms boast a modern, yet comfortable and inviting atmosphere, providing an environment that will improve the overall member experience of coming to the Y. The new locker rooms each feature a steam room, sauna, and towel service, available to all adult members.
In addition to the completion of the adult locker rooms, the Y’s new fitness areas also opened on January 2, providing a stronger and more supportive environment for individuals to achieve his/her health and wellness goals. The Y is adding 8,000 square feet of new fitness areas including a brand-new, modern Spinning studio, a new studio hosting the Y’s unique group elliptical classes, expanded state-of-the-art Zone training center, and an expanded and completely renovated Mind Body Center.
The Y’s Executive Director, Craig Panzano commented, “We are thrilled with how our new facilities are coming along and are so excited to begin making them available to the public this January. We’ve always provided a supportive and welcoming environment at the Y, but we now have the modern facilities to strengthen what members and the community can achieve here.”
With the completion of “phase one”, members are able to already begin enjoying and benefitting from the Y’s major $20 million renovation, which is scheduled to be completely finished in June. These areas join the existing fitness facilities available at the Y including a large and bright Group Exercise Center and a 4,000 square foot Wellness Center featuring a wide range of cardio equipment and weight machines.
Future areas of the renovation include a new family activity center opening in February, with the remainder of the new features opening in June, including a renovated full gymnasium, a new café/commons area, intergenerational space, and a new aquatics center, which includes the recently renovated competition pool and a brand-new warm pool facility. The new aquatics center will provide an accessible and fun environment for families, swim lessons, and therapy swim, plus a modern and more accommodating facility for lap swimmers, competitive teams, and high school swim teams.
The renovation was made possible by the generous support of donors. Those interested in supporting the project are still able to donate or purchase a commemorative brick or bubble, which will be displayed outside the new café and recreational pool areas. Panzano added, “While our renovation is transforming our facility into a more modern, welcoming, and effective resource, it’s important to understand that when you belong to the Y, you belong to a community within our community. It is a place for support and where one can always feel welcome and encouraged to pursue their goals. When you belong to the New Canaan YMCA, you belong to an organization that creates opportunity for individuals and families through a robust financial assistance program. You belong to an organization where everyone feels that they belong—whether a child with special needs or an adult cancer survivor. And you belong to an organization that allows our members to connect and give back to our community. When you belong to the Y, you belong to so much more than a gym.”
New members who join in January will receive the first month free and a waived joiner fee. New members are also invited to participate in the Y’s popular Commit to Fit program, which helps members stay motivated and create a fitness routine that they can maintain all year-long. Bridget Philipp, Senior Director of Healthy Living and Medical Fitness at the Y, shared, “We know joining a new facility or starting a new fitness routine can be challenging and we’re here to help you succeed. When you join our Y, you have countless instructors, trainers, and fellow members who are rooting for you to achieve your goals. Whether you take advantage of our Commit to Fit program, free orientation sessions, attend any one of our group classes, or meet with a trainer, there are so many ways for members to feel a sense of belonging and support here, and that’s one of the things that makes coming to the Y so special.”
